Brothers,
I am happy to report that the Gamma-Pi Chapter of Kappa Sigma has continued to experience success in its efforts over the past term. Spring semester ended with multiple highs, and the fall term has already seen great achievements.
In early May, Gamma-Pi was recognized by the Inter-Fraternity Council and the Greek Office with 13 awards – the most of any chapter on campus. Most notably, the Dave Rogers Ideals and Values Award is presented to the chapter who best exemplifies the values of leadership, scholarship, service, and fraternity. In addition, Gamma-Pi also received awards for its scholarship program, alumni relations, and various individual awards for advisers and leaders throughout the chapter. The Chapter was also on the Greek Honor Roll, and maintained an average GPA above the MIT all-mens average for the entire academic year.
The brothers' hard work throughout the year culminated at Grand Conclave in San Antonio, TX, where the Fraternity recognized Gamma-Pi with a Founder's Award of Chapter Excellence (FACE). Additional awards were given for the chapter's brotherhood program, pledge program, communications, campus involvement, academic program, intramural achievement, and rush, in addition to individual awards.
Gamma-Pi hit the ground running in the fall, starting off with a fantastic rush. For the 3rd year in a row, seventeen men pledged Kappa Sigma at MIT. The seventeen come from all over the country, with many hailing from the Midwest, California, and New England. Several play for the varsity baseball, crew, lacrosse, and sailing teams. They have already become incredibly close, participating in activities ranging from serenading the MIT sororities to competing in the MIT talent show to learning the history and traditions of Kappa Sigma and Gamma Pi.
Last week, Gamma-Pi held its annual Founder's Day Weekend. Over 30 alumni were in attendance at the weekend full of events. The Chapter recognized Brother Matt Richards '04 with the Alumnus of the Year Award for his four years of service as the chapter's residential advisor.
The semester is only just getting started, however. In the coming weeks, Gamma-Pi is looking forward to its annual Family Weekend Dinner, Faculty Dinner, Fall Retreat, and Ritual Retreat. All of the brothers are excited for the initiation of the newest pledge class, and they believe this is an especially strong class which can carry on the great successes of both Gamma-Pi and Kappa Sigma.
Keep an eye out for our next edition of the Gamma Pride, and please feel free to reach out to me at any time.
AEKDB,
Ryan Schoen ’11
