Spring 09
Brothers,
Gamma-Pi has continued the early success of the 2008-2009 school year witha strong finish to 2008 and start to 2009. We welcomed 16 new members into the chapter in November, taking us to over 50 brothers for the first time since 2004. The new brothers have all proved valuable additions to Gamma-Pi, bringing to it an active and diverse pledge class whose members hail from all over the country.
Gamma-Pi brothers have had a number of recent academic successes. The brotherhood made MIT's FSILG Honor Roll for the first time this decade, placing it in the top third of all fraternities and sororities on campus. In addition, Kappa Sigma Headquarters recognized 11 of our brothers for their scholarship and leadership abilities, with awards totaling $7000. Special honors were given to Brother Stephen Fournier ('09), who was awarded the William S. McClintic award, for his outstanding dedication and continued service to the Chapter and the MIT community.
A number of brothers are participating in varsity athletics this semester, with baseball, crew, lacrosse, volleyball, and sailing all well represented in the house. Buoyed by this athleticism, the Chapter recently reclaimed its intramural dodgeball crown, winning both the small and large league dodgeball titles. Later this semester, we look forward to defending our intramural Octathon title won last spring. Brothers are participating in several additional intramural sports, and we have strong softball, ultimate, and indoor soccer teams that look to take home titles in their respective leagues.
The Chapter also has enjoyed a strong semester of community service. Brothers sorted and packaged more than 7000 pounds of food at the Greater Boston Food Bank and participated in MIT's Fast-a-Thon to raise money for hunger awareness. Additional projects included a Charles River Cleanup project at the Esplanade and a volunteer event at Cradles to Crayons, where brothers helped inspect and pack clothes and school supplies for underprivileged children.
As we head into Spring Break, the remaining weeks look to be extremely busy. We will again be manning a water station for the Boston Marathon, a Gamma-Pi tradition. Brothers have created a Relay for Life team, where brothers will be, and have been, raising money in preparation. Our annual Ritual Retreat is right around the corner, and MIT's campus preview weekendis rapidly approaching. The spring Faculty Dinner is soon to come, and planning for a Spring Retreat is well under way. The 67th Biennial conclave is in San Antonio this July, and Gamma-Pi is hoping to repeat its success atthe 66th conclave with another FACE award.
I hope everyone's spring is going as well as ours. Please feel free to reach out to me at any time.
AEKDB,
Alan Foreman ('09)
