    Fall 08

    Brothers,

Over the last few months, the Gamma Pi Chapter of Kappa Sigma has continued its efforts to be the best on campus. The spring term wrapped up nicely, and the fall term has been off to a great start.

At the end of last semester, the MIT Inter-Fraternity Council recognized Kappa Sigma for a number of awards. These included Most Improved Chapter, Best New Member Program, Outstanding Community Service, and Outstanding Alumni Relations. Individual awards included Outstanding Resident Advisor to Brother Matthew G. Richards ('04) and Senior Legacy Awards to Brothers Jacob A. Simson ('08) and Sanjay Divakaran ('08).

The Gamma Pi Chapter was recognized at Leadership Conference over the summer as well. Five brothers were in attendance to receive awards for Outstanding Communications Program, Outstanding Pledge Education Program, Outstanding Membership Development Program, Campus Involvement Excellence, and Outstanding Single Communication.

Upon returning to MIT, Gamma Pi started the 2008-2009 school year off right with a great rush. 19 pledges accepted bids, the most at MIT. Although two de-pledged early on, the remaining 17 have formed an extremely close class. The seventeen come from all over the country, with many from the Midwest, California, and Texas. Several play for the varsity baseball, crew, volleyball, and sailing teams. Additionally, they have been busy serenading the MIT sororities, competing in the MIT talent show, and learning the history and traditions of Kappa Sigma and Gamma Pi.

In the past few weeks, MIT has had a well received Parent’s Weekend Dinner, and a great Founder’s Day Weekend. At Founder’s Weekend, Brother Eugene Glover ’97 was recognized for enduring commitment to the Chapter, having served for several years with the Housing Corporation.

Brother Michael Metzger '03 recently earned the second-place award from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for his work developing software for the optimization and planning of hurricane evacuation. The research, which he has been conducting over the past few years as part of his doctoral dissertation, also received an award from the National Science Foundation and was featured in many popular business and technology publications. Brother Metzger was presented with the Alumnus of the Year Award at Founder’s Weekend for his research and continued devotion to the chapter.

Just over halfway through the semester, there is still a lot left on our schedules. Fall Retreat is weeks away, along with community service events along the Esplanade and at the Greater Boston Food Bank. The annual Ritual Retreat and Faculty Dinner are soon to come, and planning for a spring term philanthropy event has begun as well.

Overall, the Chapter is doing well and looking forward to the months ahead. Look for our next edition of the Gamma Pride coming soon, and feel free to contact me at any time.
